A breaker that trips once is annoying. A breaker that trips three times in a week is your home telling you something specific.
The trick is figuring out what it’s telling you. There are six different causes. Some are five-minute fixes you can do yourself, others mean stop everything and call an electrician. Here’s the diagnostic walk-through we use on house calls.
Cause 1: Overloaded circuit (most common, often DIY)
You added a space heater, a hair dryer, and the toaster at the same time on a 15-amp circuit. The breaker trips because the total load exceeded its rating. This is the breaker doing its job, protecting the wiring from overheating.
How to diagnose:
- The trip happens after you turn on a high-wattage appliance, not at random
- The breaker is in a kitchen, bathroom, garage, or living room (places with high-wattage devices)
- The trip happens slowly (seconds to a minute after turn-on), not instantly
- Resetting the breaker works, but the same combo of devices trips it again
How to fix:
- Move one of the high-wattage devices to a different circuit
- Don’t run space heaters and hair dryers / toasters / coffee makers / vacuum cleaners on the same circuit
- If you can’t avoid the load, you need a dedicated 240V circuit installed
When to call an electrician: If your home is so old you don’t have enough circuits to spread the load, you may need additional circuits or a panel upgrade. Common in 1960s-70s houses where the kitchen has 1 to 2 circuits for everything.
Cause 2: Short circuit (always call an electrician)
A hot wire is touching a neutral wire (or directly touching ground). The fault is essentially zero-resistance, so massive current flows instantly and the breaker trips immediately.
How to diagnose:
- The breaker trips the instant you plug something in or flip a switch
- It trips the moment you reset it (won’t stay reset)
- May be accompanied by a popping sound, a brief spark, or burned-plastic smell
- Often happens after physical damage (driving a nail into a wall, pinching a cord, water damage)
Don’t keep resetting. A short circuit means there’s a damaged wire somewhere. Resetting just means a few more seconds of fault current with each reset, enough to overheat the wire and cause a fire.
Call us. This is one of the diagnostic visits we do most often. We’ll trace the circuit, find the damaged segment, and repair it. Cost typically $150 to $400 depending on access.
Cause 3: Ground fault (GFCI breaker territory)
A hot wire is leaking current to ground, through a damaged appliance, a wet outlet, a damaged extension cord, or moisture in a junction box. GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers and outlets trip when they detect a 4 to 6 milliamp imbalance between hot and neutral.
How to diagnose:
- The tripping breaker has TEST and RESET buttons on it (it’s a GFCI breaker)
- Or the tripping outlet has TEST/RESET buttons (GFCI outlet)
- Trips happen in bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors, garages (wet locations)
- May trip when an appliance is used (washer, dishwasher, hair dryer)
- Trips spontaneously without anything turning on (intermittent moisture)
How to fix yourself:
- Unplug everything on the circuit, reset, then plug things in one at a time. The one that triggers the trip is the bad device.
- Replace any damaged extension cords or appliance cords
- Dry out wet outlets and let them air out 24 hours
When to call: If the GFCI trips with nothing plugged in, or trips immediately after reset with all devices unplugged, the wiring itself or the GFCI device is bad. Those are the two situations we handle.
Cause 4: Arc fault (AFCI breaker, modern code)
An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker detects the unique electrical signature of an arc: a tiny, intermittent spark across a damaged wire, a loose connection, a frayed cord. Arcs are the ignition source of most electrical fires, so the 2014+ code requires AFCI on most residential circuits.
How to diagnose:
- The breaker has “AFCI” stamped on it, plus a TEST button
- Trips often have no obvious cause (no high load, no short)
- May trip more in the bedroom circuits (where AFCI is most commonly required)
- Vacuum cleaners with worn brushes are notorious for triggering AFCI trips (the brush arcing is real)
How to fix:
- If a specific appliance triggers the AFCI consistently, the appliance has a worn motor or damaged cord. Replace or repair.
- If the trip is random, you may have a loose connection at an outlet or junction box. We trace and tighten.
- If the panel is older and full of new AFCI breakers retrofitted in, sometimes the AFCI itself is faulty (older breaker + newer breaker can be slightly mismatched). Replace the AFCI.
This is one of the more common visits we do. AFCI tripping mysteries that turn out to be a single loose backstab connection at an outlet 30 feet away. Aluminum branch wiring (see our aluminum wiring guide) is a frequent cause.
Cause 5: Aging breaker mechanism
Breakers have moving parts. They wear out. After 30 to 40 years of thermal cycling and mechanical use, the bimetallic strip and trip mechanism can drift out of calibration. The breaker either:
- Trips at a load below its rated amperage (nuisance trips), or
- Fails to trip when it should (silent danger, see our Federal Pacific Stab-Lok deep-dive)
How to diagnose:
- Your panel is over 30 years old
- A specific breaker trips while a different breaker on the same load doesn’t
- The breaker is warm to the touch even at low load
- Other circuits in the panel are fine; only one is acting up
Fix: Replace the breaker. $50 to $120 for the part, 30 minutes of labor. Cheap and worth doing if you’ve ruled out causes 1 to 4.
If the panel itself is old (FPE, Zinsco, fuse box), don’t just replace the breaker. That’s a band-aid. Plan a full panel upgrade.
Cause 6: The actual appliance is dying
Sometimes the breaker is fine, the wiring is fine, and the appliance is the problem. A motor with a shorting winding, a heater element with a developing ground fault, a transformer with internal damage. The appliance pulls more current than it should and the breaker correctly trips.
How to diagnose:
- The breaker only trips when one specific appliance is running
- Unplug that appliance and the breaker stops tripping
- The appliance is older, runs hotter than it used to, or makes new noises
- Common culprits: window AC units, old refrigerators, garage power tools, pool pumps
Fix: Replace or repair the appliance. The breaker is doing its job by protecting your wiring from a faulty device.
When you can DIY-reset vs when to call us
DIY-reset OK (try once, see if it stays):
- Single trip after a known overload (you ran the AC + hair dryer)
- GFCI trip in a wet location after rain
- One-time arc fault during vacuum cleaner use
Stop and call us:
- Won’t stay reset after first attempt
- Panel feels warm or smells like burning plastic
- Tripped 3+ times in one day
- Trip happens with nothing plugged in
- Sparks visible at outlet, switch, or panel
- You see any of the emergency electrical signs: burning smell, melting plastic, exposed wire
The 30 minutes it takes us to diagnose is much cheaper than a fire. Diagnostic visits are $150 to $250. For that we identify the root cause, test the related circuits, and fix it on the spot if it’s a small job.
